Cease and Desist Letters Made Easy – Protecting Your IP {Guest Post by Getting Nerdy with Mel and Gerdy}

Protect your IP - Getting Nerdy with Mel and Gerdy How many times have you received feedback from a buyer stating that they want a refund for a product of yours because they found it online for FREE?  As sellers, it is necessary to protect our intellectual and creative property. Unfortunately, with every step we take to do this – including our copyright and Terms of Use, adding logos to every piece, providing step-by-step instructions on how to use/credit our products, and even blatantly saying “DON’T” – it doesn’t always work with buyers and they upload our products to the Internet regardless of our requests. It hurts, it’s frustrating, and it takes countless hours of searching the web for products, not to mention the amount of time it takes to write a Cease and Desist Letter for each violation, keeping track of sent letters and which ones have responded and not. Wouldn’t you rather be making products and interacting with your buyers in a more meaningful way? We would. We had SO many products out there – it seemed like an endless sea of free products to anyone who entered in just the right search terms – so , we decided find a way to streamline the process of sending out and keeping track of our Cease and Desist letters. We came up with a simple tool using a Gmail account and an excel spreadsheet that literally made our lives easier and allowed us to focus more on our product creation and less on the mundane task of protecting our products from piracy.  We thought other sellers could benefit, so we made it into a product in our store.  Anyhow, if you’d like to make your workload a little lighter and your a little easier, check out our Cease and Desist Letters Made Easy tutorial created just for sellers. This tutorial that will guide you through, step-by-step how to:

  • Set up a Cease and Desist Gmail draft email and provides a sample DMCA Letter to copy and use for your personal use
  • Set up and manage a Google spreadsheet to track your C&D’s, removals and emails
  • Set up a Mail Merge

Say goodbye to the daunting process of sending out C&D’s each month. Yes, you’ll still have to search the web for those DMCA violators, but with this system you can streamline the tail-end of the process, making mail delivery easy, keeping your records straight, and see who’s been opening your emails, too. We hope you find that it saves you time and money – we did!

Always nerdy,

Mel and Gerdy

    Excellent! I love all the resources on your site though my path forward isn’t necessary creating and selling lessons through TPT I think a lot of teachers can use this. I have a list of 38+ teachers making some great money online I’d love to share with you. I limited it to only 4 people from TpT so it provides some other avenues for teachers and I think your readers would be really interested. Just let me know Mel and Gerdy if you’d like to see what I have.

    Thanks for what you are doing! I FULLY believe teachers shouldn’t feel guilty about making more money on the side doing this. Not for one second though I know many feel as though they should feel guilty after being conditioned so long to not be “greedy” or “selfish.”
